MEA Convention
I just got back from the Media Ecology Association’s Annual Convention (this year held at the U of Maine), where I presented Fiction DP Syndrome. There were a ton of questions from the audience, which made the presentation especially rewarding bc of the exchange between myself and so many scholars. I learned a lot from their questions.
The presentation went so well, in fact, that more than one professor told me that they may use FDS (and/or Swimming Inside the Sun, the novel it first was posited in) in courses they’re teaching next year. Very exciting!
During the convention, which lasted from Thursday morning through Sunday afternoon, we all took a field trip to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. As media ecologists, my seat-mate and I briefly discussed the intellectual complexities of experiencing a park largely through the windows of a bus - versus, you know, like, actually walking around in the park. But we had a short time and it was worthwhile to be there, even if most of the park was seen through the filter of glass. We did get out for a brief time on this cliff, however. Even though it was taken with my crummy iphone camera, the photo still shows the splendor of the park.
