Dr. Laurence Gould
Several days ago I was given the sad news of the passing of Dr. Laurence Gould, an accomplished psychoanalyst. During his career Dr. Gould held many respected positions, including being the former Director of the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program at the City University of New York.
Larry and I had been in contact several times via email discussing Fiction Depersonalization Syndrome. A month ago we met in his office for an extended period and for what proved to be a wonderfully rich exchange. I had been mostly (though not exclusively) approaching my research into FDS from a media-centric angle, and Larry’s insights into how FDS fits into the psych field’s framework were invaluable. The details of what we discussed have given me new paths to explore, and, excitingly, reinforced the validity and uniqueness of FDS in ways I hadn’t considered, notably in the area of personality types. As my research continues there is no doubt that Dr. Gould’s feedback will have left its mark. My condolences go out to his family and loved ones.
